The old Johannesburg suburb of Kensington lies to the East of central Johannesburg. It is bordered in the South by Malvern and the well-known Jules Street. Here can be found hundreds of small houses built in the early 1920s. Kensington developed into one of the most popular residential suburbs of Johannesburg. The suburb is home to several good schools, notably Jeppe Boys and Jeppe Girls schools. Tucked into the centre of Kensington is the Kensington Koppie, a favourite walking place for dog lovers, as is Rhodes Park with its lake. Rhodes Park is home to a vibrant bowling club and has a public swimming pool.
Kensington is very handy for Eastgate shopping centre and for the Flea Market and Fisherman's Village at Bruma. The suburb is home to several good restaurants and to the Darras shopping centre. On the southern edge of the suburb can be found the Mel-Bel Tennis Club. Kensington is just a stone's throw from the Ellis Park rugby stadium.
