Edenvale

Edenvale is located halfway between the airport and city, and thus provides a convenient base for the business traveler. Close to and part of Edenvale is the suburb of Modderfontein, where in 1896 a factory was established for the manufacture of explosives. The Modderfontein dynamite factory has become one of the largest explosives and chemical factories in the world. The factory is now surrounded by a conservation park of 8000 ha, and is home to several species of buck and antelope and over 200 bird species.

Like many of the towns in South Africa, Edenvale arose from the splitting up and sale of farms in the area. Edenvale's history dates back to 1859 when the farm Rietfontein was given to a Mr A. Nel. The farm was split up and sold by a T. Mynhardt in 1890 and at the end of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War stands were sold for £20 each. It was not until 1909 that a post office was opened, and the following year a police station opened. It was not until the 1930s that growth of the town accelerated until the sizeable city we have today was reached. Edenvale is now a vibrant metropolis that has recently become part of the Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality.
