Halfway between Sandton and the city centre of Johannesburg, in an ideal position for exploring the city, you will find the suburb of Fairmount. Just east of the M1 and Rosebank, the suburb is surounded by the neighbourhoods of Highlands North, Sandringham, Raedene Estate and Fairmount Ridge. The area is also ringed by a network of main roads including Athol Street, George Avenue and Louis Botha Avenue, which makes transport around the busy city relatively easy, especially if access to the M1 is important to your travels.
Fairmount is also close to the trendy suburb of Norwood, which is home to pavement style restaurants and coffee shops, and has a vibrant local culture and shopping centre. Its an area which is great for dining and is filled with an ethnic mix of cuisine that will tempt you to experience its typical street culture.
Just on the other side of the M1 from Fairmount you will find the fashionable suburbs of Saxonwold, Parkwood, Melrose, Parktown North and Melrose Estate. Zoo Lake is always worth a visit, but more than any other time a Saturday morning, when you will be surrounded by locals picnicking, walking their dogs, jogging and playing with their children. The park has a wonderful restaurant, Moyo, with a Moyo kids section that provides workshops on weekends and public holidays.
