Nestled beside the Silvermine Nature Reserve you will find the Cape Town Suburb of Westlake. With beautiful views over False Bay, Westlake is also home to some beautiful residential estates and the Westlake Golf Club, which claims to be the Capes most popular course. Within minutes of Westlake you will also find the Steenberg Golf Estate, Kirstenhof and the coastal town of Muizenberg.
Also within minutes of Westlake is a well know part of South African History, Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison. Among its famous inmates are Walter Sisulu and Ahmed Kathrada, both of whom were anti-apartheid activists, and Alan Boesak, who served his prison term here after he was convicted of fraud in 2000. But its greatest inmate later became the first democratically chosen President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. He was transferred to Pollsmoor from Robben Island before being sent to Victor Verster Prison prior to his release.
Incorporated into the Table Mountain National Park, the Silvermine Nature Reserve stretches from Kalk Bay through to Constantiaberg. It gets its name from the Silvermine River which starts in the reserve and runs down to Clovelly. It is definitely worth taking the short drive and experiencing this truly remarkable natural, scenic, historical, cultural and recreational asset.
