Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, located in the Constantia wine region of Cape Town, has a storied history that reflects its prominence in South Africa's winemaking heritage. The estate’s origins date back to the late 17th century, when it was first established by the Dutch settler and farmer, Simon van der Stel, who is also known for founding the famous Groot Constantia estate. Buitenverwachting was initially named for its picturesque location "beyond expectation," reflecting the beauty and potential of the land. First sold as a farm in 1773, the farm was cultivated with 90000 grape vines in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete. The farm has been restored to its former glory and a recent recultivation yielded a harvest of 100 tonnes - and after a period of 30 years without harvest, this was definitely Beyond Expectations!
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Buitenverwachting underwent various changes in ownership and management, contributing to its development as a renowned wine estate. It gained a reputation for producing high-quality wines, benefiting from the favorable climatic conditions and fertile soils of the Constantia Valley.
The Buitenverwachting Restaurant has also been classed as one of Cape Towns finest restaurants. With its breathtaking views of the vineyard, uncompromisingly high quality of service, and exquisite menus, it is not difficult to see why it was on Cape Towns top 10 list. Although Closed on Mondays, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day, with A la carte and set menus to satisfy not only your physical appetite but also that appetite for a touch of class!
