Parkhurst is one of the older Johannesburg suburbs and is situated about three kilometers to the west of Rosebank. This is a suburb of small narrow streets and houses built in the early 1920s. The suburb developed into one of Johannesburg's more popular suburbs and has its own school. There are several other good schools dotted around the outskirts of the suburb. On 4th Avenue can be found a series of old shops and in the centre of the suburb is the Verity Park Recreation Centre. Pirates Sports Club is just at the edge of the suburb, as is the Parkhurst Bowling Club. Parkhurst is very handy for the up-market shops and malls of Rosebank and the office parks dotted along the length of Jan Smuts Avenue. The suburb is very handy for the Wanderers Cricket Ground, and Golf Club. Melrose Bird Sanctuary is just a few blocks away.
