Welcome to birdwatchers' Heaven, where raptors perch in the tall, woodland trees, and the Pearl-Spotted Owlet announces its presence with a high pitched call. Surrounded by a large variety of indigenous trees and shrubs, Malelane is also the summer residence for Lesser Spotted Eagles, and nesting grounds for the Yellow-Billed Kite.

One of the original meanings for the world Malelane is the Swazi "lala", which means to sleep, aptly fitting this small farming town which is the centre of the Mpumalanga sugar cane industry, and also famous for its tropical fruit and Malelane Game Farms. It's in this laid back atmosphere where visitors quickly succumb to the languid Malelane lifestyle, and finally unwind from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
Malelane's hot, sluggish weather during the day, and dark bushveld nights make Malelane the ideal Mpumalanga town for a stopover before exploring the southern parts of the Kruger National Park - the ultimate wildlife safari experience, with not only the Big Five, but more species of mammals than any other African game reserve.

En-route to the Kruger Park, leave behind Malelane's neat farmlands and enter the rough, Malelane bushveld as you head 5km north to the Crocodile River crossing, then the Malelane Gate entrance to the Kruger National Park. Once you drive through the Malelane Gate, you have entered the 'original' Kruger Park reserve. The Malelane Gate is recognised as the most convenient gateway into the Kruger Park, and is therefore the busiest gate in Mpumalanga, and guests entering the Kruger National Park should expect long queues, especially during the holiday season. As an alternative, use the Kruger Park Crocodile Bridge entrance, 52km east of Malelane on the N4.

While in Malelane, visit the Mthethomusha Game Reserve (36km from Malelane accommodation), which offers visitors a number of exciting morning and evening game drives in open safari vehicles, taking them through the reserve and into the neighbouring Kruger National Park.
The golf lover will enjoy a round at Malelane Golf Club, a definite 'must play' for every golf enthusiast. This magnificent 9 hole course is situated in the picturesque Onderberg surrounded by a variety of indigenous trees teeming with birdlife.

Also visit nearby:
Marloth Park (36.9km west of Malelane accommodation), lying on the banks of the Crocodile River
Komatipoort (45.1km from Malelane accommodation), just a stone's throw away from the Crocodile Bridge Gate entrance to the Kruger National Park.

Our Visit to Malelane / Leopard Creek in the Kruger Park area.
"After leaving Sabi River Bungalows we stuck to the Kruger Park area, and decided to splash out for a game of golf at Leopard Creek.
The trip from Hazyview to Malelane was only about two and a half hours, and we got to see a bit of the towns White River and Nelspruit - both were bigger than we'd thought, and both offered easy access to the Kruger National Park, as well as accommodation in the way of Self Catering and Bed and Breakfasts.
We ran out of time and didn't manage to play golf at either White River Golf Club or Nelspruit Golf Club, which I believe are both beautiful and challenging golf courses.
Having said that, one of our life's dreams was fulfilled in that we scored a game at Leopard Creek Golf Club.
Bordering the Kruger National Park, this perfectly manicured golf course was challenging and worth every kilometer traveled to realize this dream.
Wallowing in luxury, we were spoilt rotten by the professional staff and exquisite views from the glorious Leopard Creek Golf Club house.
The whole time through our 18 holes we walked along the Kruger Park fence, but failed to see any interesting game.

After golf we moved on to Buhala Lodge where "Sugar" welcomed us and once again we were spoilt rotten. The rooms were great and the meals were no less that 5-star. We ate on the deck overlooking the Crocodile River, and saw stacks of hippo only a few paces from the lodging.
Another game at Leopard Creek would have been perfect, but at just over two grand per person for 18 holes..........?
We moved out the next morning, and left the Kruger Park area on our way to Swaziland."

Review - Guest House Accommodation in the Kruger Park Serenity Forest Eco Reserve in Malelane, Mpumalanga
Our Kruger Park honeymoon accommodatioin at Serenity Forest Eco Reserve Bed & Breakfast in Malelane, Kruger Park was all we imagined it to be!
Situated in a densely forested valley, this incredible place is surrounded by the Mpumalanga mountain ranges, on the southern border of the Kruger National Park.
The perfect Kruger Park accommodation in our "lake view" thatched suite, and the decor guaranteed a special experience. Dan and I spent our days swimming under waterfalls, walking forest trails, enjoying romantic picnics and the wellness treatments on offer, followed by spectacular sundowner drives overlooking Swaziland, Mozambique and the Kruger National Park.

Our compliments to the chef for the three course dinners which were amazing, after which we would relax on the privacy of our deck.
The week spent in the Serenity Forest Eco Reserve was undoubtedly the best ever - truly a unique and soul enriching Kruger Park accommodation experience..
