Emmarentia is a large suburb in Johannesburgs Randburg area. It is home to the ever popular Emmarentia Dam and part of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.
The Dam offers the residents of this suburb one of the best dog walking sites in city and it is interesting to note that the dam itself was built mainly to provide work for landless farmers at the end of the Boer War in 1902. Big blocks of stone were taken from Melville Koppies for the dam wall. The dam and an area of land to the west of the dam were part of an endowment from Lourens Geldenhuys to the City Council to be used as a park and for recreational purposes. Other activities include canoeing and windsurfing. The area is also abundant in birdlife and offers a natural haven of peace and tranquillity for the entire family to enjoy. The suburb is a beautiful upmarket place with clean and safe tree lined streets which offer welcome shade in summer. Most of the homes in Emmarentia are geared towards family life, offering residents and visitors space and comfort for every member of the family. These free standing properties are set on large plots with rolling lawns, many with swimming pools, ideal for cooling off in the hot summer months.
