Ceres

Ceres lies in a peaceful valley in the shadow of the Boland Mountains on Route 62 and is one of the country's largest deciduous fruit producing regions. Named after the Roman Goddess of Fertility, Ceres is synonymous with the fruit juice of the same name.

The town of Ceres lies on the western side of this fertile valley, through which the Dwars River bustles forming pools and rapids in which trout fishing is very popular, just 150 km from Cape Town. The Ceres district is far larger and equals the rest of the Breede River Valley put together.

Also known as "the Switzerland of South Africa", because of the snow that falls on the higher mountains in winter, Ceres has a lot to offer visitors. One can visit fruit farms between December and April, there are hikes and walks, cherry farms invite you to pick cherries and there are a number of San rock paintings in evidence on some of the hikes and trails.

Ceres, nestled in the picturesque Cape Winelands, is known for its beautiful landscapes, fruit orchards, and outdoor activities.

Here are five things to do or see in Ceres:

1. Visit Ceres Zipslide Adventures: Experience the thrill of ziplining through the stunning Ceres Valley. The ziplines offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes, making it an exhilarating adventure for all ages.

2. Explore the Ceres Fruit Route: Ceres is famous for its fruit production, particularly apples and pears. Take a drive along the Ceres Fruit Route, visit local farms, and enjoy fresh produce, fruit picking, and farm tours. Many farms also offer homemade jams, juices, and other delicious treats.

3. Hike in the Matroosberg Nature Reserve: This reserve is home to the highest peak in the Boland, Matroosberg Mountain. It offers a variety of hiking trails with stunning views, rock formations, and, in winter, even snow. The reserve is also popular for 4x4 trails and camping.

4. Visit the Ceres Transport Riders Museum: Learn about the history of Ceres and its role as a key transport route in the 19th century. The museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and exhibits related to the transport riders who played a crucial role in the region's development.

5. Experience the Ceres Railway: Take a scenic train ride through the beautiful Ceres Valley. The Ceres Railway Company offers nostalgic train trips on vintage steam and diesel trains, providing a unique way to experience the stunning landscapes and rich history of the area.

These activities highlight the natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and cultural heritage that make Ceres a delightful destination in the Cape Winelands.
