Old Slave Tree - George, Garden Route

In front of the Tourism Bureau in York street is a big oak tree known as the Old Slave Tree. The tree was planted in 1811 by Landros van Kervel.

The reason for the name is an old lock attached to the tree. The legend was that the lock was used to chain slaves to the tree when the site was still occupied by the jail.

Get caught up in the 'legend' and imagine the slaves of yesteryear chained to the tree. Visit this magnificent specimen of an oak tree to find out the 'real' story of the chain in the tree. Make sure to visit the Tourist Information Center to find out about more legends of the area.
