Three Sisters

Three Sisters is a landmark along the N1 in the Karoo National Park and is situated about eighty kilometres to the northeast of Beaufort West. It is at the junction of the N1 and N12 national routes, and has become a popular stopping off place with the building of a Shell Ultra City there.

Three Sisters gets its name from three clearly visible and almost identical dolerite-topped koppies in the vicinity. These were formed by the differential weathering of a dolerite sill. There is limited accommodation available in the area.

A small village in the central Karoo might appear to be an unusual place to visit , but for the model train enthusiast, there is a true gem secluded away in the attic of an old farmhouse there. Owner Johan Hamman has over 600 metres of model train track laid out in the attic of his farm, with model trains from all over the world.

Three Sisters, a small locality in the Northern Cape of South Africa, is named after three prominent hills that serve as a notable landmark for travelers. Although it's a remote and quiet area, there are several interesting things to see and do in and around Three Sisters:

1. Three Sisters Hills: The iconic trio of hills after which the area is named is a must-see. These geological formations are striking against the vast Karoo landscape and offer excellent photo opportunities, especially during sunrise and sunset.

2. Karoo National Park: Located a short drive away, the Karoo National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park is home to a variety of animals, including black rhinos, Cape mountain zebras, and a range of bird species. There are several scenic drives, hiking trails, and picnic spots that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Karoo.

3. Bird Watching: The Karoo region is a bird watcher's paradise, with numerous species adapted to the arid environment. Look out for birds such as the Karoo lark, Ludwig's bustard, and the Namaqua sandgrouse. The area around Three Sisters offers ample opportunities for spotting these unique birds.

4. Cultural and Historical Sites: Explore the small towns and villages near Three Sisters to experience local culture and history. The town of Beaufort West, not far from Three Sisters, has several historical buildings and museums, including the Beaufort West Museum, which provides insights into the local history and the life of famous heart surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard.

5. Star Gazing: Similar to Sutherland, the remote location of Three Sisters ensures minimal light pollution, making it an excellent spot for stargazing. On clear nights, the Milky Way is vividly visible, and the peaceful surroundings enhance the experience of observing the night sky.

6. Karoo Farmstays: Experience authentic Karoo hospitality by staying on a local farm. Many farms offer accommodation and the chance to participate in farm activities, enjoy traditional Karoo cuisine, and learn about the farming practices in this arid region.

7. Scenic Drives: The drive along the N1 highway through the Karoo offers stunning vistas of the semi-desert landscape, with wide open spaces, distant mountains, and occasional wildlife sightings. It's a peaceful and picturesque journey, perfect for those who appreciate the vastness and beauty of the South African interior.

While Three Sisters itself is a small and tranquil place, these activities and attractions in the surrounding area make it a worthwhile stop for those traveling through the Northern Cape.
