Prince Alfred Hamlet

Prince Alfred Hamlet is located approximately 10 km north of Ceres on the R303. The village was founded on the farm Wagenboomsrivier which belonged to Jan Goosen on 8th December 1861. It was named after Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, who had visited South Africa the previous year.

The surrounding farms produce substantial quantities of deciduous fruit and potatoes, and peaches, pears and plums from this region are exported to countries all over the world. The village, which is the terminus of the branch railway line from Wolseley via Ceres, is geared up to handle the packing and distribution of these crops in season.

If you travel another 10 km north on the R303 you reach the Gydo Pass which takes you through the Gydoberg mountains. This pass links the Warm Bokkeveld valley with the Cold Bokkeveld. The pass was completed in 1848 by Andrew Geddes Bain while he was building the Michells Pass to Ceres. The original pass built by Bains was replaced by a tarred road after the Second World War.
