Halifax Island - nr Luderitz, Namibia

Halifax Island is a small, rocky island located off the coast of Lüderitz, Namibia. It is famous for being home to one of the few colonies of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in Namibia, offering a rare opportunity to witness these charismatic seabirds in their natural habitat. The island's remote and rugged location makes it an ideal breeding ground for the penguins, as well as other seabirds like Cape cormorants and kelp gulls. Halifax Island is part of Namibia's Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, known for its nutrient-rich waters, which support a diverse array of marine life.

Due to its ecological importance, Halifax Island is a protected area and not open to public visitation. However, tourists can observe the penguins and other wildlife from boats as part of organized tours departing from Lüderitz. These boat tours often include visits to nearby Shark Island and other coastal attractions, providing an exciting way to explore the rich marine environment of Namibia's southern coast. The penguins on Halifax Island have become a major draw for eco-tourists, contributing to conservation awareness in the region.
