Kammanassie Nature Reserve, located near De Rust in the Little Karoo, Western Cape, is a protected area in the Klein Karoo that forms part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning over 50,000 hectares, it is characterized by rugged mountains and dramatic landscapes, home to a unique blend of fynbos and succulent Karoo vegetation. The reserve is situated along the Kammanassie Mountain Range, which offers scenic views and an ideal setting for nature lovers seeking a more remote and undisturbed wilderness experience. This extensive tract of wilderness begins near Uniondale and runs westward along the Kammanassie River towards Dysselsdorp. The flora in the area is a mixture of kloof shrubland, arid fynbos, spekboomveld, waboomveld, and afro-montane forest.
The reserve is known for its biodiversity, particularly in terms of plant life, with over 400 species recorded, including several rare and endemic species. It also supports a variety of wildlife, including leopard, klipspringer, and a significant population of the Cape mountain zebra, which was once near extinction. Birdwatchers will appreciate the reserve’s diverse birdlife, which includes species such as the black eagle and various sunbirds. However, it is not a developed tourism destination, so facilities are basic, and the reserve is primarily suited for experienced hikers, researchers, and conservationists.
Due to its rugged terrain and limited infrastructure, Kammanassie Nature Reserve does not cater to casual tourists, and access is typically restricted to those with prior permission. For visitors, the nearby town of De Rust serves as the primary access point. It is advised to contact CapeNature for permits or specific inquiries regarding hiking routes and overnight stays.
