Totius House Museum - Potchefstroom, North West

The Totius House Museum in Potchefstroom, North West, is dedicated to the life and work of Jacob Daniël du Toit, better known as "Totius." A prominent Afrikaans poet, theologian, and translator of the Bible into Afrikaans, Totius made significant contributions to the Afrikaans language and culture during the early 20th century. The museum, housed in his former residence, offers visitors insight into his life, literary works, and legacy. The original furniture, personal belongings, and memorabilia displayed here reflect the daily life of Totius and his family, making the museum a valuable cultural and historical site.

The Museum building itself is a typical example of a town house built during the Edwardian period. It was built when the Theological School of the Reformed Church had to be moved from Burgersdorp to Potchefstroom. It was built to an almost exact replica of the ground plans of the rectors home in Burgersdorp. Although the house was completed in 1905 and occupied by the principal of the Theological School, professor Cachet until 1911 it was only then that it became the residence of Totius (Professor D.J. du Toit) who succeeded Cachet at the School.

The Totius House Museum holds particular importance due to its preservation of Totius's literary achievements and the role he played in developing Afrikaans as a formal language. It stands as a tribute to his scholarly and cultural efforts, which shaped the language and literature of South Africa. Visitors can explore exhibits related to his translations, poetry, and theological writings, gaining a deeper appreciation for his influence on South African heritage.

The entire content of the house originated from the Du Toit family.

The museum is open to visitors on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00 (Closing for lunch from 13:00 to 14:00), on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00 and on Sundays from 14:30 to 16:30. Admission is free.
