Salt is still gathered on the salt pans at Papendorp where it is still processed in the traditional way. The inhabitants of Papendorp are permitted to gather salt for resale and each person is allocated a section to work. Salt-containing sea water is guided into shallow dams. The sun's heat then evaporates the water. Once the water is gone, the salt that remains on the bed of the dam is scraped together. That is how the salt is gathered. The pans can be visited and visitors are allowed to purchase bath salts here, generating an income for this simple fishing community. This is definitely something different for the kids, who will see the true origins of this important mineral.
