The Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden near Worcester, located in the Cape Winelands of the Western Cape, is a unique botanical garden dedicated to showcasing the indigenous flora of the Karoo and other arid regions of southern Africa. The gardens were established in 1921 but was moved in 1945 to its current residence in Worcester. Covering an area of over 150 hectares, the garden is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hex River Mountains. It focuses on the conservation of succulent species, particularly those adapted to dry, desert-like environments. The Karoo Garden is one of only a few national botanical gardens globally devoted entirely to arid and semi-arid environments.
The garden features several hiking trails, including the popular Shale Trail. As you walk along the trail through the beautiful gardens you will also get to enjoy the spectacular Breede River Valley views. A large portion of the land is maintained as a natural reserve, allowing visitors to explore both cultivated garden sections and untouched natural vegetation. In addition to its focus on conservation, the garden plays an educational role, offering a nursery where visitors can purchase indigenous plants, including succulents and drought-tolerant species. The garden also hosts educational programs and is home to the Vygie House, where botanical exhibitions and workshops are held throughout the year.
The garden is a favorite destination for plant enthusiasts and hikers alike, offering a glimpse into the beauty and biodiversity of South Africa's semi-arid regions.
