Echo Caves - nr Ohrigstad, Limpopo

The Echo Caves, located near Ohrigstad in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, are a fascinating natural wonder and one of the oldest caves in the country. Discovered by a local farmer in 1923, the caves were named after the echoing sounds produced when certain stalactites and stalagmites are struck. This natural phenomenon is one of the many intriguing features that make the Echo Caves a popular tourist attraction. After the completion of the Abel Erasmus Pass and the Strydom Tunnel in 1959 the cave was opened as a tourist attraction. Later the cave was declared a National Monument.

The caves are adorned with impressive limestone formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and helictites, which have formed over millions of years. The dramatic shapes and sizes of these formations create an otherworldly atmosphere, captivating visitors as they explore the depths of the caves.
